21st Century After-School Program
The Matheny-Withrow 21st Century Program is an after school academic intervention program. It is a collaborative effort between Springfield School District 186 and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Illinois.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE 21ST CENTURY PROGRAM
Q. What is the 21st Century Program?
A. The 21st Century Program is a Boys and Girls Club academic intervention program for students attending Matheny-Withrow. 21st Century offers a before-school program and an after-school program at Matheny-Withrow.
Q. How is the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Illinois involved with 21st Century?
A. We are a Boys and Girls Club Program. When a student enrolls in the 21st Century program he/she automatically becomes a member of the Boys and Girls Club and may start utilizing the clubs facilities at age 6.
Q. How do I enroll my student in the program?
A. All families may complete the enrollment paperwork for the program, but applications are ranked by greatest academic need. Those students with the greatest academic need, are placed in the program before those students with little or no need of academic assistance.
Q. What if I have more than one student to enroll in the program?
A. The student with the greatest need will determine when your family of students may start.
Q. What is the cost of the program?
A. The only cost is a $15.00 enrollment fee which is required for each child, but no student will be turned away because of an inability to pay.
Q. When can my child start?
A. Your student will be given a start date once three things are in place: 1. Your students academic need has been determined. 2. The paperwork is complete. 3. The parent/guardian has had an orientation to the program.
Q. What are the hours for the after-school program?
A. The after-school program operates from 3:30-6:00, Mondays through Thursdays on full days of school only.
Q. What are the attendance rules?
Students should not miss more than three days a month.
Q. Why are there attendance rules?
A. Our research shows that the program has the highest impact on students with the best attendance. In addition our funding source requires attendance expectations.
Q. What happens during the 21st Century After-School Program?
A. The schedule for after-school is as follows:
3:30-3:45 Snack
4:00-5:00 Class
5:00-5:45 Enrichment
5:45-6:00 Student pickup
Q. What happens during classtime?
A. Teachers help students with their homework for 30 minutes. There are then 30 minutes in which teachers and students concentrate their efforts on improving reading and math skills.
Q. What is the enrichment component of 21st Century?
A. The enrichment part of our program provides students with opportunities to try new things and improve skills in areas such as the arts, physical education and technology. We feel this part of the program is as important as class time and we encourage parents/guardians to pick up students after our enrichment period ends at 5:55.
Q. How are behavior issues handled in 21st Century?
A. No student can enter the program with either a referral or a suspension in the previous 30 days. This gives students an opportunity to address behavior issues prior to starting the program. Once in the program, students receive training about expectations and these expectations are posted throughout our program. Parents/Guardians are kept informed of behavior concerns.
Q. Does the program provide transportation?
A. We are unable to provide transportation at this time. Families must be able to provide transportation in order to participate.
Q. Where do I pick up my student in the evenings?
A. Students should be picked up in the parking lot at the northeast cafeteria door. Parent/Guardians should not be late. 6:01 is considered to be a late pick up as the program ends at 6:00.
Q. How can I support the efforts of my student in 21st Century?
A. Talk to your student about their day. Visit your student during the program. Help your student to succeed by supporting the programs expectations of your child.
Q. How is the 21st Century Program Funded?
A. The United Way is the sponsor for the Matheny-Withrow Program.
