The Iles third grade classes led by Mrs. Korza, Mr. Morgan, and Mrs. Shepherd received an engaging lesson about healthy hearts. Dr. Randy Martin and Dr. Frank Mikell provided assistance in this hands-on lesson with help from the AP Biology class of Ms. Cathy Turner at Springfield High School. The purpose of this lesson was for students to learn how the heart works and how blood flows through the body. The third grade unit on the heart provides a foundation for students in understanding how they can make healthy decisions about the food that they eat and the amount of exercise that they receive. This unit will help students understand how their heart works when they start using pedometers in physical education class in fourth grade and then develop their individual wellness plan in fifth grade. Iles School has a coordinated approach to teaching children health in an effort to prevent childhood obesity. We want to thank Dr. Martin, Dr. Mikell, and Ms. Turner, her students and a big thank you to St. Johns Hospital for providing the third grade students with blue gowns, gloves, and goggles.
