Do The Right Thing May 10, 2011
The “Do the Right Thing” winners for the month of April have been selected!! Thank you to everyone who sent in a nomination. Students that did not win this month will be considered for next month’s selection.
And the winners are:
Xzavier Watson – 2nd grade, McClernand Elementary
Xzavier is being honored for doing the right thing when he found a watch while playing on the playground. Once Xzavier found the watch, he held on to it until he found a trusting adult to help him get the watch back to its owner. Xzavier was not only honest, but also very concerned that whoever lost the watch was very upset and looking for it.
Marcus Daniels- 3rd grade, Matheny-Winthrow Elementary
Everyday Marcus walks a couple blocks out of his way to make sure two little girls make it home safely. When the two girls expressed a fear of walking by themselves earlier this year, Marcus volunteered on his own, to walk with them everyday.
Arion Berry- 5th grade, Sandburg Elementary
Arion took it upon herself to befriend a younger student who was having trouble coming to school. Before Arion came into her life, the student would often be upset and want to leave school. Arion has made a huge difference in her life. The student is much happier and doing great in school.

Do The Right Thing is a monthly program sponsored by Springfield Public Schools, the Mayor’s Office, and the Springfield Police Department that recognizes Springfield youth who go out of their way to help others.
Any student nominated one month will continue to be considered for future Do The Right Thing recognition in subsequent months. Students will be recognized at the first City Council meeting of each month.
Do the Right Thing
Springfield Public Schools, the Springfield Mayor’s Office and the Springfield Police Department are teaming up to inspire children to “Do the Right Thing.”
Do the Right Thing is a national program that encourages local partners to recognize children in their area for commendable behavior. Starting now, anyone can nominate a student, from kindergarten through high school, who has done something remarkable in our community.
A child may be nominated for extraordinary deeds or random acts of kindness, whether it is shoveling an elderly neighbor’s driveway for free or standing up for a friend in need.
Nomination forms are available at the Springfield Police Department, Municipal Center East, and at school offices throughout the District.
Each month a panel of judges from the District and the SPD will choose one to three students for the Do the Right Thing Award. Student finalists will be invited to the first City Council meeting of each month where the Mayor and Police Chief will recognize the winners and present them with a certificate. The child’s principal, family and friends also will be invited.
The Do the Right Thing program was started in 1990 by the Miami Police Department. Since then, more than a hundred chapters have been established throughout the country.
